Thanks for that, but I prefer an OS that actually has some available software. And I like to try it (with a bootable "live" cd) before an install.

I'm using Mint Linux, a super-stuffed version of Ubuntu, which comes with all the codecs one needs pre-installed. Even with all the bloat (who really needs Open Office on a netbook?) it's still far smaller than the Windows XP install. And all Ubuntu software works with it.

It'll do...for a while. I'm unlikely to spend a lot of money upgrading drives and memory when for just a little more money, I could buy a much more powerful netbook. I'd like one with Ion graphics, and an HDMI out, so it's not a wimp with high-def video. I do not give a crap about 3D gaming.

I've got a fully-capable laptop, but thoroughly enjoy having a netbook to tinker with!

Thanks Ant Flo. I'm not going to sell it. I love the little thing. It's my favorite toy. It's limitations add to it's charm. It's fun coaxing the little "toy computer' into doing things it was never intended to do.

At one time, when I was running XP, I moved all the Windows Temp files, etc. onto the 8GB SD card that's been in the unit since I got it. I knew 4GB wasn't going to cut it, so I ordered the SD card at the same time. I ALWAYS install programs to the SD card, not the internal SSD.

I think I'll likely live with the limitations and b#tch about them. How can you download Android? I've never been able to find a place where I could do that. I've tried lots of flavors of Linux, but not CrunchEEE. The thing I like about Mint Linux is that, not only does it work right out of the box on the EEE, but it comes with all the codecs you need pre-installed.

I think I'll download CrunchEEE...haven't tried that one!

I think your SSD is soldered in - can you raise the flap and check? While you're under the hood, check and see if yours has the unused pciE slot - some of the 4gb models did, some didnt. If you do, you can just order an 8gb module and drop it in - not sure if you'll be able to use the 4gb module at the same time or if it will deactivate it.

Other options to increase the storage capacity would be to to remove the internal wifi adapter if it is pciE, and drop another SSD there. Or, get an 8gb or better SD card, and either boot your OS from there, or keep your fully patched OS on the internal SSD, and use the SD (or USB drive) to hold your actual applications you want to install...

Other OS options - Android, Mac OS (Leopard, Tiger, etc), CrunchEEE, etc...I think you can probably get VLC to install on any of the *nix variants, and with that you can get pretty much any file format to play out of the box.

As an alternative, I'll give you $100 for it.

I have the original Asus EEEPC 701G, with 4GB SSD. Yes it can run Windows XP, but you have to turn-off automatic updates or the little drive will quickly fill to the brim. Not a great way to fly...certainly not secure.

So I've tried various flavors of Linux. Currently I'm back to XP, but I'm nervous about the security risks of running XP unpatched.

So I've been trying Linux distros again from bootable cds (via a usb drive). Last night I tried Mandriva. Close...no cigar. Tonight it was Mint Linux with Fluxbox. All the hardware worked, I could get online through my wireless router, but I could not after 45 minutes of fiddling figure out how to access files on my desktop PC over the network. There was no "network" option under the "go-to" dropdown box. Enough of that...life is short.

I may go back to the NON-Fluxbox version of Mint Linux. I've used it before, and it worked well...plus all the software created for Ubuntu will run on it. And it comes with all the codecs needed for watching DVDs, mp4 videos, and mp3s pre-installed.

Suggestions?
