You don't have to but I recommend it.

You don't have to unplug the laptop and remove the battery, just hold the power button in for 10 seconds.

Proud, I have a new HP that does the same thing from time to time. I use the ole remove the battery trick too. I spent an hour on the phone with tech support and they don't have a clue what causes it to happen!

Unplug the power cord

Close laptop, turn it over and find the battery and remove it completely.

Wait a minute or two

Replace battery

Plug in adpapter and power on

May get a message that Windows did not shut down properly - choose start Windows normally

jesus saves, but i deliver.

I have a new HP laptop. Last night, it said I needed to update and would do so in 10 minutes. So, it starting updating and has been doing the same thing since last night. It's not showing anything but a black screen with a little blue circle going around and around. It will not let me do anything, not even shut down. I have even tried just pushing the power button but it wont do anything. Please help.
