You can run XP on it....Possibly Windows 7 as well since it requires about the same amount of memory as XP does. But forget trying too run Vista....it just will not work. You can upgrade if you have an upgrade disk....but if not, you will have to do a clean install using the full version and that requires re-formatting the hard drive. All personal files will be lost.

I have an old IBM laptop that has windows98 on it. I would like to update the windows and give it to my daughter as a starter computer for Christmas. I can't afford to take it to a pro. Is it possible for me to take out the current windows and install a newer version, if I can find one I can afford myself?. If someone has a version of XP that has been used on their computer, can I use it again on this one? From what I can tell, the IBM has a total of 3760MB.
