I tried the disk again and it's letting me reset it to factory settings. I hated losing all my stories, but, hey, maybe I'll still have a computer b/c my hubby hates me using his laptop. :P

Well Jason I used the installation disk and it told me in a "thank you very much"way to remove the disk and turn the machine off. Hubby will have to do the work on the hard drive. I have no clue about computers. I let you know what happens after hubby works his magic.

If you have the Windows XP installation CD, try putting it in your CD drive then reboot your computer. It will boot from the CD, then let you use the Recovery Console to run "chkdsk," which might fix the problem.
More often than not, though, this error means that you have an actual hardware problem. If using the XP CD doesn't work (or if you don't have it), the next thing to do would be to unplug the computer and remove the case, then unplug the cable from both the hard drive and the motherboard. Wait about 15 seconds, then plug them back in.
Important: when you do this, make sure you're not on carpet, otherwise you risk creating a static shock that could ruin the motherboard.
If that doesn't work, come back and let me know. Worst case scenario is that you have to replace the hard drive, but you can buy a good one for around $50-$100 (less if you buy it online); the tough part is getting the software back!

Well it's finally happened my computer is dead or dying. I booted up this morning to cruise on over to gowilkes and a blue screen keeps popping up that says,
A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
Unamountable Boot Volume
And than I went through the steps it prompted me to and still this blue screen. Should I just give it a good kick or is it dead?
