i tried to download this
http://www.sophos.com/suppo...
It would almost get through, then an arror message would pop up and say this is not a WIN32 application. The only action it will allow at this point is to click ok. It then closes the windows.
I'm going to try the link that Easy provided.
I'll let you know what happens.

If I'm right about the name of the virus, here's a free program that should remove it for you:

http://www.sophos.com/suppo...

If I'm wrong, this program won't hurt anything, it just won't fix it, either. So it's worth checking out.

If that doesn't fix it, please do let me know.

This bug might be harder to get rid of than we first thought. From what I have read, even if you delete the file the bug we come back as another name and file. That is the reason Virus scans are no help. They can delete it but it always will re appear as something else. Each time you restart your computer it can come back. I will keep reading to see what we can do.

Go to this web site. It is a worm. This site will explain.
http://www.neuber.com/taskm....
Click on the Security Task Manager. You can download a program that will help.

Easy... When I went to the general tab in msconfig the selective startup was already checked. I unchecked the fourth box and rebooted. I then went on to Jason's advise.
When I went back to msconfig startup, of course nothing was checked. So, I went back to the general tab and checked normal start up and rebooted again.
I then went back to msconfig and unchecked msmsgs and the other stuff that had previously been unchecked.
Rebooted again.
On the startup tab msmsgs was still unchecked.
When I did the search for the file, at first it didn't find anything until I told it to check all the hidden files also. The search then turned up 12 files. I tried to copy and paste, but it wouldn't let me.
I will try to copy them to an e-mail and send it to you. Do I send them all to the recycle bin?
I tried again to open a link from the cv, but it still wouldn't let me.

I searched the virus databases for msmsgsryz and turned up nothing. It still could be one.
Try running your system in Safe mode. If you don't know how to do that let me know and I will tell you how. Then run your virus program.
If nothing is found and you are still having problems I would do a system restore. Make sure you save all your files before. If after this you are still having problems then it may be a virus in the mother board. If all else fails take the computer to the flea market in Yadkinville this weekend. There is a man there that can fix anything and he is cheap. He use to teach computers at school.

Easyrider, when she first contacted me by PM, she reported two problems:

1. when she clicks on a link, anywhere, it just opens a blank page; and

2. Task Manager won't open, at all.

The fact that Task Manager wouldn't open made me think that she had a virus, since the quick-and-easy way to see if you have a virus is by looking at your Processes list. But nothing in her Startup list looks like a virus.

- PDesk goes with her video card

- NeroCheck goes with her CD burner

- lxbkmgr goes with her Lexmark printer

- AOLHostManager obviously goes with AOL

- qttask goes with Quicktime

- msmsgs goes with Microsoft Messenger

- Microsoft Office obviously goes with Microsoft Office

- Image Transfer goes with her CD burner

- America Online 8.0 obviously goes with AOL

The only item that is questionable is the msmsgsryz, which isn't running. But, it sounds like a potential virus, because of the apparently random "ryz" at the end. This makes me suspect that the "msmsgs" that's running is NOT working with Messenger, but is instead cloning it so that no one would notice it.

If that's the case, though, then unchecking it obviously didn't turn it off the first time (when someone unchecked it).

Farmer's Daughter, my best guess here is that you are infected with the W32/Forbot-BD worm. This one is known to replicate itself as msmsgs, so it's the most likely problem (especially if it's running from the Windows folder instead of the Program Files folder).

The very first thing I would do is uncheck it in MSCONFIG, then rebooth the computer. When it comes back up, go to MSCONFIG again, and make sure that it's not running again. If it is, then we might have a problem.

If it's not running, then immediately go to Start > Search, and find the file. Once it's found, send it to the Recycle Bin (don't permanently delete it yet), then reboot again. When it comes back up, go to MSCONFIG to make sure it's not running, then go to Start > Search and make sure that it's not back again.

Let me know if this works.

Ok. Since you are running XP then it is going to be a little different.
Type in MSCONFIG in the run box like before. Once the box comes up look at the GENERAL screen. Check selective startup. Then the 4 boxes below check the first 3. Leave the 4th one blank. Click Apply and restart your computer. After the computer comes up a box will appear that will say you have choose a selective startup. Check the box so that it won't come up each time you restart
What kind of problems are you having? .

Easy... I am running XP. The programs that I listed are the only ones there. Maybe I am having these problems because i am missing something that I should have.

Almost all of those programs you have listed can be shut down on startup. You should have some others that you need that aren't on your list. You should have one for Exployer and system. That is the 2 main ones. Which windows are you using. 98 or XP. The more you have running on startup then the slower your computer will run.
Anytime you download another program you need to make sure that it doesn't run on startup as most will do now

By the way, I am on AOL.

I haven't forgotten about you, I'm just doing a little research. None of these look like a virus, but there has to be something going on to keep Task Manager from opening.

So stay tuned, and I'll post when I figure something out.
