I bought a used modem on eBay ($8) that was auctioned off by a cable company and it is working, I just do not want to rent it for $5 every month.
Someone with corporate at Charter told me they reset their IP address everyday for security and older routers may give you some troubble for that reason. I have an old Netgear that gives me problems because it will not reset without rebooting all the hardware. I have a newer deluxe router and it seems to work most of the time, on occassion it will block the signal but you can reset it in 2-3 minites. Usually when I had problems with no service I had to refresh the modem then it was working again.
If you buy a modem it should work with Charter and Embarq, this avoids a rental fee that can go on til infinity... I am working on a desktop computer in my living room across a W-Fi network and I have another PC hard wired in another room, its not hard to set-up.

I live in Purlear and use a Air Card from Verizon. It was a hassel getting it working with them, had to make two trips to Taylorsville just to get it activated. All is working well now but I Wish I would have known Carolina West offers the same Air Card.

Thanks everyone for all the help. I called Charter and the only "deal" they could give me was to bundle phone and internet. That's going to work for a little while until I can find someone else.
As far as cellular service I have Carolina West.
I was looking into wireless because my husband and I both get on the internet at the same time sometimes and with Embarq we couldn't do that.
I will be looking into the other options you all have listed though. Thanks again!

I bought the cheapest one they had (about $20) for my sister's house when I went to visit. It worked vwell, was easy to install. The range was limited, so next one I buy will probably be a higher priced one, with a longer range.

Charter charges 5.00 a month for a cable modem. I got a webstar cable modem off ebay for 10.00

Netgear is a good choice. Call Charter and ask for the promotions department and ask for a better deal. I did a 2 year deal for 29.99 for the 5 meg but am getting around 20 megs.

You can buy a wireless router at Walmart for about $50.00. All you need is a high speed internet connection, and the wireless router comes with simple installation instructions. No need to pay the extra $10 per month for wireless service.

I was paying $75 just for internet and I just changed my service to 1M and now I am supposed to only pay $25. I was told (by Charter) a while back that $60 was the cheapest package there was, it makes me wonder why I had to pay so much for so long.

We had the same problem for awhile. We finally got it straightened out. We are now locked into a 2 year plan and the price for service has not changed in at least two months.
I understand your frustration. At one point we went from $92 a month to $132. It is straightened out now and all is good. We never did get our money back though from them overcharging.... I guess their employees need to be paid and the little scam they ran helped them so very much.

My bill keeps changing month to month. I called and they said my bundle package was changed and I was getting charged separate. Not really sure why it was changed but I finally got it fixed.

littlemama - there is a 2-year plan that you can be included into now.
Do you have any other services with them? I know phone is not available in your area, I tried.
It all depends on who you talk to and what time of day...

I'm in the Rock Creek area and would like to continue having wireless high speed internet but Charter is about to get on my last nerve changing this and that and adding things to my bill that shouldn't be. Who else can I get in this area?
