internet access via my cell phone

Android phones are as secure as you want them to be. They still get viruses just like any other os. Also rooting the phone DOES NOT mean that YOU open all privileges to programs and allow malicious content to run uninterrupted. There's an app called Superuser that allows you TO grant full access to ONLY the apps that you want. Rooting the phone is a good way to go if you want full access to your phone and not be limited by the default factory pos apps that come with most android phones. You can always un-root if you don't like it.

Sincerely,
Chris

I go flow on that... fox fi all the way, root only when absolutely necessary.

I have been successful with a similar method as described by "ant flo". Wireless tethering is possible without rooting your phone, and rooting your phone will only cause more trouble than good.

An Android phone runs a version of the LINUX Operating System Kernel, and it is secure from viruses and other malicious threats. Only, when you root your phone, you open all privilleges to programs and allow malicious content to run uninterrupted.

Good Luck,

Not entirely true - you don't have to root it to wireless tether. You can sign up for a tethering plan with your provider, and use the built in wireless hotspot software.

If you dont want to pay for a tethering plan, and have some monthly data bandwidth to spare, you can also do the wireless tether WITHOUT rooting, and WITHOUT getting a data plan. I use FoxFi, located at

https://play.google.com/sto...=com.foxfi

If your phone isnt on the supported list, and your laptop doesnt already have a built in bluetooth radio, go get a $10 bluetooth dongle for the laptop, and share away for no extra charges per month.

Thanks chris, I think I understand the basics. Will Google the rest and pray to the cellular gods.

The phone is on a business plan and I'm also gonna see if I can just add the laptop as a data line since we haven't reached our max. My service with CWest has always been good; but sometimes it's hard to get a tech savvy person for non-standard questions.

You'll have to root the phone so that you'll have full access to the phone. Once you root, it voids the warranty if you have one, so make sure you backbackup your current rom. Titanium backup is an awesome app for backups. Once you root, download barnicle wifi tether, and it will turn your phone into a wifi router basically allowing you to use your phone for wireless Internet. Becareful though because some phone companies restrict you from tethering and will suspend your account if they notice, so make sure you check their policy first.

Thanks,
Chris

Android Millennium alleged smart phone I'm stuck with here. I'm wondering if there is a way to toggle off of it to get internet access on a laptop running Windows7.

Thanks in advance. If I can do it, great. If not at least I'll quit wasting time trying.
