"Is it ok to unplug the cable cord from the back of the modem but leave the other end of the cable - which I can not disconnect - attached to the laptop?" ... yes it is ok

I finished surfing the web and shutdown my Laptop. I tried to disconnect the cable that goes into my laptop port but it will not pull out! I like to disconnect my laptop because I am afraid a power surge might tear up my laptop if I leave it plugged into the modem--I do not have a surge suppressor on it. I have not had the laptop very long and I do not know very much about computers. Is it ok to unplug the cable cord from the back of the modem but leave the other end of the cable - which I can not disconnect - attached to the laptop? I am afraid that if I try to force it loose it will tear up the port connection. If I wanted to attach a surge suppressor to the outlet to plug the modem/phone line into--would unplugging the cord from the outlet to the modem mess up something
