Ok, if the modem is on and the lights say it is online, hook your laptop straight to the modem with ethernet cable. Now, look in network connections and see if it says connected. If it does you need to see what ip your getting. Go to start and type cmd in blank provided. This will pull up command prompt. Now, type ipconfig /all. Find your ip address. If this is Vista you will look for the ip of IPV4. If you have an ip starting with 169, the host needs to be reset by charter. It will probably be easiest to have a tech come out and you show them the bad ip. I hope this helps!

I have already did the config thing. I have talked to HP and they had me to do that several times plus several other things and they kept saying that it couldnt have been the laptop and that it was the internet. I just really don't know what to do. The post believe this with the laptop..what all have you done???

Look down 3 posts, also try temporarily disabling your antivirus and firewall then go to Start>run and type inetwiz in the box, follow the instructions to create an Internet connection

the last time charter came out to the house he brought his laptop in my house and it hooked right up. I don't know what it is. I had it directly hooked from the modem to the laptop and there was nothing. Now I went and got a router and there still is nothing. Best Buy says that there is nothing wrong with it. Its really getting to me though. I did go and get a sprint connector (pen/usb) on a contract where I can access the internet anywhere and it works. But Im not going to pay $60 a month for that and my internet bill at home. If anyone knows what to do plz help.

We had the same problem once. We could not get a laptop to connect to the internet but it would connect at other places. Charter kept saying it wasn't their fault. We finally borrowed a laptop from someone and brought it home and it wouldn't connect either. We then insisted they better fix the problem. They did. I wish I remember what the problem was and what they did so I could tell you what to look for.

If the computer will get on the Internet at Best Buy the computer is OK.
The Problem has to be with your provider, or possibly a setting on the modem/Router Try hooking the laptop directly to the charter modem and see if that works if not go to start>run(type command in the box) when you get the "c" prompt type ipconfig
let us know what happens and what you see

Is Charter still billing you for Internet access? If so, get an adjustment to your bill.

Do you have a desktop in your home that runs off the same interent? And is it working? If not, you can try asking a friend to bring theirs over and see if it will connect. I have a laptop that hits off the wireless router connected to my desktop, with Charter internet. Havent had any problems with it. If the laptop is connecting inside Best Buy, then i would guess its in your Charter internet. Maybe in the lines outside or something. I have had Charter come out several times to fix our interent in the past and 90% of the time they have to come back out the next day because the first person is an idiot. Thats the only thing i have against them lol. If you just have the internet running straight into your laptop, you should see if you can find someone else with a laptop and see if it will connect. I dont know much about it, but im guessing if there is nothing wrong with the internet, it should connect to any laptop hooked to it. If there laptop doesnt connect, then that may mean its the interent and not your laptop.

Good luck with your computer. I hope you get it fixed because if I am not mistaken Best Buy has gone out of business. I dont know if it was the entire chain or just the Hickory store. I havent lived in Hickory long so I am not sure if the store that I am thinking about was Best Buy, it was in a shopping center and near The Olive Garden. Good luck.

I am in need of help with my hp laptop. I purchased my laptop Nov 14 2008 at Best Buy. Everything was going well with the laptop until february. I had charter internet on the laptop since Nov. Since February I haven't been able to access the internet on it. It keeps saying that it can't access the internet. Someone from charter has came out three times (3 different people) and they haven't been able to get it online either. They have switched out the modems and checked the wiring and still nothing. I have taken it back to Best Buy twice but they were able to get online in the store. As soon as I bring it home then there is nothing again. I have purchased a router and a charter installer hooked it up and still there is nothing. Its strange!!! I don't know what to do. Best Buy didn't do a work order due to them not being able to find a problem....plz someone tell me what to do b4 I have to go back to Hickory again.
