I got it to work......just had to type "chkdsk/f" instead of chkdsk-f. Hope that helps someone else on Windows XP Pro.

Oops, left out some steps. From the drive menu, you have to select properties, then tools, then "check now".

You can start opening up "my computer" and right-clicking the drive. Check the "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". If this runs like it did on 2000, you will reboot and it will start running the test before continuing to Windows. If you want to run it from a dos window, you would need to put a space between the chkdsk and the -f, but to do this you really should boot to DOS prompt rather than Windows.

you should always back up your files-----start --> all programs -->accessories--> system tools--> system restore --> create restore point this dosnt back up your data just gives you a safe point to return to.) weekly or monthly to either another partition or external disk. (just incase) after five years your prefetch folder will be very full of programs that you dont even use any more plus if you leave your pc on 24/7 or havent set the power options to turn the hdd off after a while it will wear out. click start --> run --> and type cmd. now type chkdsk-f
this will check your disk for errors and will fix them.

OK, here's the deal- l am running WinXP and here lately it won't go into Standby on its own. If l put it in Standby, when l 'wake it up' the tower makes a rattling noise until l reboot. Is this a sign the end is near? Time to backup my files and make arrangements for a proper disposal, or is there hope? She's 5 years old, and l am very attached!
