I live about half a mile for walmart on pads road and cannot get embarq. Funny thing, they have the embarq dsl about three fourths a mile up the road I live on. I have called them several times and they said I could not get it. I am waiting for them to get the service down a the road to my house. I have charter but it is so much higher. I wanted to try to save some money and still get a descent download. Oh well I guess it is just a waiting game to see if they are going to do anything about it.

I knew I liked good ole Wilkes Phone Company for some reason!
This DSL may not be the fastest possible, but it's a 100 X's faster than AOL used to be & not near as troublesome! And I bet I live further out than about any of you.

Connie, What area do you live in. I am in the old 60 Hwy 115 area. It just burns me up. I have a friend that has embarq that lives on Mertie Rd. Another friend that has Wilkes Telecommunications that lives out past North High. By the way the crow flies I bet I am less than 3/4 a mile from the Embarq office. I don't even live a mile down old 60. If I lived further down I probably could get WTC. Even when they wer offering the package deals at Charter, when I called they said it would be 59.00. Compared to my 9.95, I just can't justify spending that much when I should be able to get Embarq for 23.99.

Embarq here, too...and we have been told that we cannot get DSL either based on our location. We had a technician out here last summer and he laughed and said there was a "switch" not far from us and it wouldn't take anything for Embarq to run DSL into our neighborhood. Why they said they couldn't do it was a mystery to him.

We call Embarq about every 2 weeks and request DSL and they claim they send those request to the tech. dept. and after so many calls they would probably run it down here to us.

???Who knows...my dial up is sad and I just afford sat. right now...and I refuse to deal with Charter. Maybe the old string-in-a-can might speed us up...lol.

Embarq told us that we could get DSL two different times. They even sent us the equipment two different times, but when the tech came out to hook us up. He told us that we were a mile too far, if we hooked up, it would be no better than dial up. So we stuck with aol dial up, until this past Christmas, I gave in and got my son HughesNet for Christmas.

If you have a friend with an embarq DSL modem - get em to bring it over. Disconnect every other phone device in the house, and plug it in. No, you wont have an internet connection, but it can tell you if you really ARE too far out. http://www.dslreports.com/f... has info on how to connect to their current dsl modems and run the built in line diagnostics. If it shows that you are OK, then its just a matter of getting a sympathetic tech on the phone to place the order.

Like puppy I too have been told that I cannot get high speed through Embarq. They said I was 1800 feet too far. Charter wanted 59.00 per month. Hughes net was 59.00 for the very cheapest thing they offered. And the bad part is that the first time I called Embarq they said yes I could get it and even sent me the equipment . The day before time to hook it up they called back and said that I was too far out. I have been told by 2 of their techs that I should be within range. But I have had no luck yet. I am still suffering on Walmart Dial up. If anyone else has any ideas I wish you would let me know.

All the desktop computers I can find are high right now, guess they've jacked up the prices to get ppl's income tax money.

I say we start a fund then to buy her one. I'll put in the first $20. to be sent to Hummingbird or Cottontop to be in charge of. Anyone else want to help? I'm hiding this here, she might not like it, but we miss her.

the fact is if you push it the cable company will have to run a line to your house. its the law. thats why they dont have any compatition .
