If your hard drive does not come with backup software, Acronis True Image is money well spent. It will not just back up your files, but create a complete image of your hard drive onto the new drive. Should trouble arise, you can copy this image back to the original drive...operating system, settings, and all. There are other imaging solutions, such as Norton Ghost, but I greatly prefer Acronis.
For real security for your files, you need to also back them up off-site. I use an online backup service called Mozy Home. For 5 bucks a month, it runs in the background, and automatically backs up my files. If a meteorite comes streaking across the night-sky, and destroys my home completely, I will not have lost a single file. I may be dead....but my files will be intact!

If you are using the external for a backup, it will work fine, and most come with automatic software to do the backups. If you are thinking about replacing your drive with a stand a lone drive, you will have to purchase software that will mirror your C drive.

no, you have to copy it over to the new harddrive, use a copy type of software, and hope for the best... Your programs will probably not work after that as some of your files may not copy over to the new drive in the correct space. Good luck.

My computer is 5 years old. If I buy an external hard drive will all the stuff on the computer automatically go on it? I have GOOGLED this to death and can't find the answer. If it won't what will I have to do?
