Sounds like a boot-sector virus. If you have another computer or friend with one, download and make a copy of bitdefender rescue CD. http://www.bitdefender.com/...d-627.html
Boot to the CD and follow prompts to clean out virus'. It's is simple and I would give it a try.

Ok. With the laptop pluged into the wall. Press the power button Now start pressing F11
This should load a HP recovery manger Now under I NEED HELP section One the far right side Click on Microsoft start up repair.

If it is a virus it is fixable. If the drive is non longer functioning for some reason it may not be. The reason the pc is asking for a boot disk is because it can not currently find the operating system or the hard drive it was on.
What version of windows are you running? XP 7 or 8 Do you have an install disk or dvd?
Make and model number on your PC?

Wife installed a virus then shut down the computer then came back on with a black screen asking for a boot disk.

Depends on the drives current condition. Does the drive power on? Was it reformatted or did you accidentally re install windows? Did the drive fail due to the developing of bad sectors?
