Actually, real windex no longer uses ammonia and never did use it in quantity. I typically use eye glasses cleaner sprayed onto a paper towel or a eye glasses cloth.

Is this a CRT screen, or LCD? The LCD screens are usually the thin, lightweight ones that have a cloth-type screen, where the CRT screens are much larger and have a glass screen.
The glass screens, I usually clean with a lightly dampened paper towel, and then dry immediately with a dry paper towel.
And LCD screen, though, can be damaged by any type of moisture. I usually just spot-clean with a very, very barely dampened end of a paper towel. Don't push too hard, either; just barely wipe off any bad spots.

Using Windex or anything with ammonia on a screen that is not glass can turn it yellow over time. Stick with a special cleaner.

just be sure to turn off the monitor for a bit, spray the windex on the towel, and then clean the monitor

Walmart has special sprays for computer screens which I use, however, I don't see the harm of using Windex if you don't overspray and are careful.
