Plug a regular phone into the line, and try calling the fax number with the phone. If the fax answers on the other end, then you know there's something wrong with your fax machine. If it doesn't, then the problem is with the phone line or phone company.

I would think that should not be the problem but worth a try.
It is hard to say what the problem is without more information or being there to look at it and test it.

The two numbers that I was trying to fax to were dedicated lines.
Any other suggestions.

check the ph # your calling make sure its a dedicated fax line.
it may be that the other end is set to phone only instead of fax or phone /fax

I have a dell printer that copys, faxes, and scans which I have had for several years. For some reason now I can not fax locally but can send long distance. My IP server is Embarq. I have unplugged my motem and the wires from the wall and it still doesn't work. Any suggestions. It will ring and state on my phone line in use and then it just stops ringing and does not make any connection.
