My computer has a fax modem in it. Does anyone know how that works? My printer can also be used as a fax but I've never really researched what I needed to do to get it to work. Do any of you have experience with this?

If you have the right kind of fax machine, you can hook it up to the phone jack that comes out of the answering machine and set the fax on TAD (telephone answering device) and when a person calls the answering machine picks up but if the fax noises come thru the fax turnsoff the answering machine and takes the fax. I know this works because I have had one like this for years.

yes you can have a fax machine hooked to your phoneline and still receive calls you will need a one plug phone jack to two plug phone jack adapter.
unless your fax machine has a built in phone
it can be a little inconvienant . my fax machine answers on the third ring and squeals in peoples ear if i leave it on auto. i leave it set on manual and have people call me before they send me a fax(very very seldom recieve faxes) so i can switch modes to auto so it will receive the fax.

I would rather not pay for the extra line. I just want to know if you can have a fax and still get regular calls to your answering machine if it is not a fax coming in.

If the fax is on it will pick up when the phone rings. The answering machine will not pick up. The telephone rings once and the fax machine picks up.
Sounds like what you want is another line for your fax machine.

Can you hook up a fax machine to your main phone line and still get regular calls on it with an answering machine? I guess what I am trying to ask is if the answering machine can tell it is a fax and not pick up. We may just get a fax line instead. How does that work? Are you called per call i you use it to call a person or get a call or just per fax sent and recieved.
