Ok, finally followed Pnthrfn1's suggestions and here's what I got.
For the first two commands, this is the response: No operation can be performed on local connection while it has its media disconnected
For the final command, I got a list of information including host name, node type, IP routing enabled (no), WINS proxy enabled (no), media state (disconnected), and physical address.
Any further suggestions? I still cannot connect.

OK, I did not get a chance to try anything regarding IP addresses as we were out of town all weekend, but here's some info that I thought I posted earlier, but apparently did not.
There is nothing wrong with the router, modem, cables, or computer.
The old computer connects to the internet when the cable is plugged directly into the modem - it just doesn't recognize the router.
The new computer works through the router - through any port it's plugged into.
So, router works - the new computer works through it. Modem works - both computers work, either through router or directly through modem. Cables work and computer works - computer connects when connected directly to modem.
I have every intention of trying to work with the IP addresses this evening. Any other thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

one other thing if none of that works while in the router, try plugging a pc directly into the modem if it works in modem and nothing works in the router its a router problem.

also because its net cable unplugged the pc does not have an ip address so it wil lnot let you release or renew the ip because it never had one!!!!
also the router default gateway has no bearing on this either because this is a connectivity problem between the pc and the next device not the router and the internet!!!!

Here is what you do. When plugged into the router. Try a different port on the back of the router. If it still says network cable unplugged then try a different pc. If a different pc works then sorry to say the problem is with the computer that says net cable unplugged. If another pc does not work try a different cable, network cables go bad often and all the time. These are really the ONLY 3 problems this can be.

Check your IP settings for default gateway are to your router - frequently 192.168.1.1.

Should I do this with the computer plugged into the modem, router, either or neither?
Will do it tonight when I get home, if I remember!

Click start, run and type cmd. In the command window type "ipconfig /release" (no qoutes) and hit enter, then "ipconfig /renew" and enter. Now type "ipconfig /all" and enter. Post the results, but if both the computer and default gateway are 192.168.?.?, it will probably work now.

We have two computers. One running XP and one running Vista. Until this past weekend, both computers were hooked up to a DSL modem and router and had internet access.
Over the weekend, I switched where the computers were in the office. Moved the newer, faster one to the bigger desk where we do more work.
My home 'network' has never worked in that I was not able to access each computer from the other or print from both computers, etc. We accepted that.
Now, the older computer, the one running XP won't connect to the internet through the router. It says Network Cable Unplugged. The cable works fine and is not unplugged and the computer will connect when plugged directly into the modem.
Any suggestions?
I do not have the Repair option under the network connections screen.
