DSL question

If I understand correctly, you are trying to switch from using your neighbor's network back to using a DSL modem.

There are a number of different reasons you are having trouble. All the DSL setups I have done use Cat5/5e/6 rather than firewire (1394). In that case, if you were using TCP/IP to connect into the DSL and still connecting into the neighbor's DSL, you might hae a routing conflict. If both routers/modems are using 192.168.1.xxx as their subnet and both are using 192.168.1.1 as their internal IP there could be some problems.

That's cool. I appreciate your help given. I'm thinking its a modem issue as well. Ironically, I'm A+ certified, but DSL troubleshooting whips my butt.

Thanks again.

Well, I wish I could help more! Home networking really isn't my "thing," and you're a little more complicated than a simple DSL network.

I'm guessing that the fe:80 is setting the port, but that's really just a guess on my end.

If you're able to access the internet with the wireless connection, then you shouldn't have any software or firewall conflicts. And the IP must be set to be obtained automatically, otherwise the wireless wouldn't recognize it. That leads me to believe that the problem is in the modem.

But don't hold me to that. Like I said, home networking isn't really my forte.

Thank you so much for the advice.

  1. I am currently tapped into my neighbors network, bridging a 1394 connection and a Wireless connection with my wireless card. I started this when my modem started crapping out.

  2. I am using XP, and have a LAN connection. It says LAN connection 3, I guess since I’m on my third modem. I have firewall installed.

  3. I am noticing a fe:80 in front of my ip address, when i run ipconfig /all, which I found to be kind of odd.

I have checked out everything, and it's all installed, and still getting nothing.

I know this isn't your job, and you are doing this out of kindness, and I appreciate you taking the time to help.

This is tough to troubleshoot, without a lot more information.

1. Are you on a network?

2. Using Windows XP? If so, do you have the Windows Firewall installed, or something else? Or nothing?

If you're not on a network, try disabling the firewall, antivirus, etc, so that it's just you, the modem, and the computer (no software to conflict). First things first, make sure the thing is wired up correctly; I can't tell you how many times I've wasted an hour or two trying to figure out a problem, just to see that the stupid thing is unplugged!

In XP, go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Do you have something installed here? If not, then that's the problem, so post back and let me know.

Assuming you do have something installed here, right-click on it and go to Properties. You should have the following installed:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks (optional, I think)
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Double click the TCP/IP, and under the General tab set it to Obtain an IP address automatically, and to Obtain DNS server address automatically. Under Alternate Configuration, make sure it says "Automatic private IP address."

Click on Apply and OK to close all of the windows, and try again. Anything?

I had to get a new DSL modem. I hooked it up, logged into it, configured it, and can't get online with it.

I have tried contacting my ISP, and they said it was a computer problem. I called Dell, and they said it was an ISP problem.

I have released and renewed the IP address, disabled my antivirus protection to see if it was conflicting, all to no avail.

Any advice?

thanks in advance
