I've heard that ccleaner is great, but if the computer shuts down, that may indicate a hardware failure.

You need to run a hard drive surface scan and a RAM test. If you know how to get to the device manager and determine the name brand of the hard drive in your system, you can go to the manufacturer's website and download a testing utility.

If not, you can use Seagate's tool (a hard drive manufacturer). It will test other name brands too. Copy and paste the link below. It will take you to the end-user license agreement for the SeaTools program. Accept the agreement at the bottom and hit the orange "Download" button on the right of the next screen.

Run the file, this will install it on your system. It will leave an icon on your desktop called "SeaTools for Windows". Run this program.

This will do a quick search for hard drives on your system and then display the results. Select all items under the section "PATA-SATA" and one at a time run the "S.M.A.R.T. check", then the "Short Drive Self Test", then the "Long Drive Self Test", then the "Short Generic" and the "Long Generic" tests. DO NOT run the Advanced tests, as they will erase your drive.

You want to run each of these, and the long tests might take quite some time, but if they all return okay, you should be good on the hard drive. If you have any failures, you'll then probably have the answer to your reboot problem on cleanup.

Hope this wasn't too long and was helpful. You should run these every month or two, just to help find drive problems before you lose data.
