1. If it ask for a password at the windows logon screen, then try booting in safe mode and log on as administrator (most often, the administrator password has not been set). After logging on as administrator, you can reset your password. If you cannot log on as administrator, then get access to another computer and download Ophcrack and make a boot cd http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/

2. If you get "enter password" as soon as you turn on your PC (before it boots to windows) then to need to reset your bios/cmos password. There is a jumper on the motherboard to do this. Google your motherboard or computer model, and download manual. OR unplug your computer, remove the battery on the motherboard and hold the power button in for a few seconds. Put the battery back in and boot. You will have to reset your time. If you don't feel comfortable - take it to a pro.

I believe you're talking about resetting the bios password. Removing the jumper pin on a desktop or laptop will reset the bios to defaults allowing you to get in. If you lock yourself out of your windows account it will not let you in by simply just resetting the bios.

If you lock yourself out, many computers can be rest by removing the back ( on laptops ) and finding the reset pins. Need to refer to your booklet

1.Click Start and Run
2.Type Control Userpasswords2 and press enter.
3.Uncheck the box for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
4. Click Apply and Ok.

Alternatively, you can go to control panel-users accounts-*Find your login*- remove the password.

I have Win XP Home, SP3. I have the same question--How to disable password? How to re-enable the password? How to delete the password altogether or can this be done on Win XP? Where is this password stored? I would like it if my windows booted directly to the desktop. Thanks for all your help:)

Case and point: I gave advice (an opinion or recommendation offered as a guide to action) far from a lecture.

Also, if the user ask how to download shop-at-home toolbar, I would also advice against it. Of course it is their choice, however, I do and will continue to give my advice on what will help protect the end-user, So get over it.

Point in case is that they asked how you do it, not a lecture on why they should keep their password on the PC. The choice on the password is up to the end user, and any true computer professional would have given the user a choice, and the end result would have been up to the end user. The user got their advice that they seeked to find, so case in point is that this topic is now resolved, so there's no need in rambling on as to why they should or why they shouldn't.....

Never said toolbars, etc. have anything to do with your password. I believe my post said that they open up highways/avenues to your computer. I also realize that the user came here for advise - and my advise was to keep using their password. Any true computer professional would have given them the same advise.

Downloads, toolbars, and etc... have nothing to do with your password, more along the lines of good AV protection, and firewall protection. It has to do with having the correct administrative rights on the PC for example a standard user compared to an administrator user. Also if you have UAC turned on, more than likely the .exe will be blocked by default until you approve them to be installed. I never said she shouldn't be concerned with hackers, but she's less likely to get attacked by a hacker than she is to get infected by a virus... Finally the user came here for advice on how to do something that maybe they forgot how to do, or they just simply didn't know how, which is what the received. If the user sees that not having a password at logon, or not having a password period presents problems, then they can always put the password back on the pc.

Many downloads, toolbars, malware and virus' create highways to your computer. As for me, I will continue to take the time to type in a password. Also, hackers should be a concern - just take the time to look at your router log and note the number of attempted attacks and entry tries. There is nothing that is 100 percent failsafe and having a password just adds a little extra security. Finally, if someone needs to ask how to disable their password - then they should not disable it.

She has less of a threat with hackers, than she does with unwelcome visits to her computer by people. If she's the only one that will be using the PC, then it will not hurting anything to disable the password. If you're concerned about hackers, then just run a good firewall software to block any incoming connections other than the ones you allow. *Comodo Firewall is a good one to use, also Windows Firewall is very good as well*

Also disabling the password at logon, doesn't turn the password off if she locks the PC. So thus still providing a level of security for the user.

Really not a good idea to disable your password. Using a strong password is among the most important steps you can take to protect your computer from hackers and other unwelcome users.

Are you wanting to keep the password, it just doesn't prompt you to type it when you login, or are you wanting to totally remove the password so there's no password at all associated with the account?

*If you want to remove the password totally try this*

Click on Start and then Control Panel.

Click on the User Accounts and Family Safety link.

Click on the User Accounts link.

In the Make changes to your user account area of the User Accounts window, click the Remove the password link.

In the text box on the next screen, enter your current Windows 8 password.
Click the Remove Password button to confirm that you'd like to remove your password windows 8.

*If you just want to turn it off at logon try this*

Press "Windows Key + R".
Type "netplwiz".
If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.
User Account pop windows will appear.
Uncheck the Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer box, and click/tap on OK.

Where do I go on my computer to disable the log on password? I know this can be done. I don't like having to enter my password each time I want to log on.
