Agree with Stardust. Most Cameras these days have a MP rating that is sufficient, or far better than required to provide quality photos. Optical zoom is what I'd look for.

It will also depend on what you are wanting to do. If you are just wanting to take basic photos. I agree with Satan, wally world has some decent low-end digital cameras. Remember, the more gadgets on the camera, the more you have to learn to use it.

Mega Pixels are really very over-rated. Unless you are planning to enlarge your pictures past an 8 x 10 size, you are really wasting time buying anything over 4-5 MP or so. Are far as zoom is concerned, optical zoom is good. Most small cams offer opt zoom in the 3-4 range. More is definitely better but more expensive. Digital zoom goes much higher, but is worthless. Canon and Nikon offer the best quality.

all i can tell you is i bought a cheap 3.1 mp fixed focus at walmart $39.00 about a year ago ( had to go back and buy a $15.00 1gig SD card an hour later) $54.00+tax total it takes better photos than any fixed focus film camera i've had. and if i drop it no major loss. and the quality of the photo will let you crop the photo on your pc and enlarge it some maybe 40 - 60+ % and still have a very good photo. you can buy a much better camera now 7-10 mp with or without an optical zoom for less than $100.00
