Sometimes a driver or a bad hard drive causes a crash, but like satan says, virus and spyware can do some damage. You can check the logs to see, but if you dont understand computer lingo, then it will look like jibberish.

download the free version , install it , update it , and run it .
you should probably do the same with these
http://www.ccleaner.com/ and
http://www.avast.com/eng/av...
they have been keeping me trouble free for a long time
