could a virus have messed up my netgear connection?

It can happen but more than likely you picked up a trojan. If you can, go to download.com and get Malwarebytes and Adaware and download them. Run the scans and clean up any it finds. Then reboot your pc and scan both programs again. If it finds any, clean and reboot. Do this at least three times. If you can, type in download.com in the address bar of your browser.

my son downloaded a game off the internet. I noticed that after he had downloaded the game, that it kept running in task manager even when he wasn't playing it. I tried to end the process because our computer was running so slow and it told me access was denied. I moved his game to our plug in hard drive and tried to uninstall it from our computer. it again gave me the message, access denied. so I manually searched for the name of the game and deleted all the files in those folders.

after doing this, my wireless router quit working. when I try to use it or even reinstall it (because it no longer shows up on my computer), it says that it cannot get internet access. when I unhook the cables from the modem to the router and run everything straight into the back of the computer - completely bypassing the wireless router - then I have internet access.

could we have gotten a virus from that game that would have kicked out and screwed up my wireless connection? anybody know how to fix it? I tried online help at netgear, but they were no help!

oh - and here's something that may be important - when I first tried to access the internet after taking that game off, my search bar kept trying to go straight to a website with the words "search conduit.com" in the address bar. I could not get it to stop or go to any other site. only after unhooking netgear, could I go online to see how to fix it from automatically making that search. I then reset the default back to my homepage using the about:config in the address bar. that did not give my internet access back with the router, but it does not keep running in stuck in that search mode anymore.
