if your running xp defragging dosnt really speed up to much. earlier operating systems will benefit from a defrag more. there are a few folders that can be emptied out under the windows file but beware that is only for the people in the know about those files. Spybot search and destroy is a great program from cnet.com (very safe website). I offer a service that will speed up your boot and shutdown time, increase application startup and runtime and clean your "junk" out for a very reasonable price. http://www.pro-tech.5u.com

Defrag your hard drive. Uninstall programs you don't use. Use a registry cleaner like "CCleaner" (free from Download dot com).

Now into the hardware realm. Install the maximum amount of RAM (random access memory) that your system can use, or that's practical. What your computer wants to do is hold the programs you're running, and all the data for those programs, in RAM...because this is far faster than retrieving data from the hard drive. But if there's not enough RAM, it will constantly "swap" data from the RAM, with data from the hard drive...which really slows things down.

If you're using 32 bit Windows, there's no reason to go beyond 3GB of RAM, because that's about as much as the operating system can "address". If, however, you're using 64 bit Windows (XP, Vista, or Win 7), then try doubling your RAM. If you currently have 4GB, go to 8 (if your system can support it). If you have 6, go to 12 (actually, if you have 6GB of RAM, you're probably not noticing many slowdowns unless you're really doing some heavy-lifting).

Increasing the memory (RAM) is the biggest performance-boost most of us can do for our systems without spending a ton of money. By the way, most systems built in the past few years are capable of running a 64 bit operating system, and will perform better if equipped with 64 bit Windows and lots of RAM.

download /install/ update / run all three. they are all free
you have to register and input a serial # on one or more of them (also free)
this should fix your problems without screwing anything up.
....
if your brave .... click start ... type in.. msconfig ... when the utility open click the startup tab uncheck everything except your antivirus then reboot comp.
everything will still work but there will be a few programs like any messenger you use that you will have to manually start to use
(just reverse steps to undo if your unhappy with it)
that will get you running about as fast as you can without adding more ram ...
or jacking with things you shouldn't unless your pretty tech savvy.

I can tell you a lot of things to do but the easiest way is to go on Youtube and search. They have some good thing on there. Just search computer tips.Look for ones that do Msconfig.
