ASKU, you know when the problem started, don't you?

Well click on the start button (lower left hand corner of the screen"), click on "All Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools', then "System Restore".

It will pop up with a recommended restore point. Ignore it. Click "Choose a different restore point", and click next.

Choose a point BEFORE THE PROBLEM STARTED, then click next, and keep going through the menu.

Important...this will take time...a surprising amount of it in some cases. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING UNTIL THE SYSTEM RESTORE FINISHES, AND YOUR SYSTEM REBOOTS!

I'd be shocked if you don't have sound when this completes.

this has happened to me several times and it has nothing to do with deleting anything. i use windows xp, so i'm not sure how this would work with other versions, but this is what i do to fix it.
When sound fails, click on Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager
Sound, video and game controllers
Right click on Conexant High Definition Audio (this would probably differ on your system. Just click on what it defaults to)
Uninstall it.
Click scan for new hardware
reinstall
reboot.

Has worked for me every time it happened. Hope this helps.

Just can't figure out how Asku accidentally deleted something that important without the computer alerting them and stopping it before it happened.

they would have had to ok it before it would go ahead, would it not.?

What I also can't figure out is why you would mute everything instead of just turning down the volume on the speakers.

If it says he has no sound device, that would seem to indicate that his deiver is toast, not that he's hit the mute button. Besides, he's said that he uses the mute sometimes, so I'm guessing he knows how it works.

I do audio production on my computer for a living, so I'm very familiar with the inner-workings of Windows sound.

A system restore to a time when everything was working right should put you back in business, and in just a few minutes. Driver-related problems is one of the things a system restore is meant to address.

Before you try anything else, go to the speaker icon at the bottom of your screen, click on it, and see if it has been muted.

This happened on my computer twice, and I did not do it. It just happened when I had downloaded something. If that is ok, Next, right click on it and check volumn control options.

That's what happened to mine both times. Easy fix.

The easiest thing to do is to do a system restore to a time before the problem developed. It beats spending a lot of time troubleshooting.

you can download the drivers you need from the internet....realtek is a good audio driver, i accidentally deleted my sound drivers once and i went to realtek and downloaded the sound driver and it was very easy to do and works great!!

Try Right Clicking the speaker Icon in the bottom right hand cornor of your tray. This should open up a small window asking OPEN VOLUME CONTROL ADJUST AUDIO PROPERTIES...left click and check both to see that you don"t have it muted or turned off there....

I would guess you have an onboard sound card. Provided its not broke (which is really hard for it to break without the rest of the board screwing up) I would suggest you run the disk that came with the computer which should contain the drivers.

Things like this are sort of a pain to try and fix over the internet.

It sounds like you might have somehow removed your audio drivers.... Your computer should auto detect it and prompt you to reinstall. Has new hardware been added recently?
