Could be a scratched drive from loosing power while running, could be a corrupted Master File Table, could be the files are still there and you can take the drive out and take to some one to undelete the files. If you install anything or even using the internet can write files over your lost files making them unrecoverable. Is it a virus? Maybe a virus, new ones come out everyday doing different things. Is it malware? Could be, new ones come out everyday doing different things. I would take it to someone to have it fixed.

sounds like a file or files were corrupted. it's hard to fix the problem without knowing anything about your pc :(

a virus can delete files, but it is unlikely. I'd bet on some serious registry errors initially.

I have lost half of my stuff on the computer. The file, exit and etc is gone. I can't find it. Spell check is gone. I had google and yahoo and now google shows nothing.
