Charter Internet

I called charter last week because of my internet dropping in and out. They noticed my modem was outdated so they came out and replaced it.I don't think that was the problem though.I asked the person that came out what he thought it was and he said it was the weather. He also said when the weather was more stable, like the dead of winter, the internet would get better. Not sure if its the problem but I thought I'd share what happened with my charter experience.

The problem with your charter internet is probably not your modem. You need to get a technician out to verify but I would say more that likely there is an issue in the area especially if the person you talked to mentioned noise on the line. This is an issue that Charter is working on fixing I have been told.

Make sure all of your connections inside and out are tight.
look for discoloration around the coax connecter on the modem (Bluing) is normal blacking is not

Good Advice from Ron. There are easier ways.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
download Tcpi tweak 3.0.8
Run it
use optimized settings

make sure you modify all adapters
restart pc

Also is your nic card intel based?
if so let me know

I also had problems with charter dropping out. I changed the MTU Settings in my router to 1492 and it resolved the problem. Also change them on your computer.

MTU Settings for your router should be under WAN Setup.

To change them on your computer -

1. For Local connection: Goto MSDOS PROMPT and type the following:

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1492 store=persistent

2. For Wireless connection: Goto MDSOC PROMPT and type the following:

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network Connection" mtu=1492 store=persistent

I had a problem all day yesterday. Their DNS servers were hosed. Switched to a backup set at opendns, and back in business full speed.

My internet was dropping, Charter said new modem, to buy one. I got one from Staples but we never could get it to work. Charter sent a technician and I bought one from them, actually cheaper than Staples. My old modem lasted 7 years, no problems at all with the new one.

i had the same problem instead of calling charter i just went to Walmart bought a new Motorola Surfboard ($65.00) it fixed about 98%-99% of the problem the service is still dropping out occasionally for a few seconds to a minute but it is nowhere near as bad as it was ... it was dropping out very very frequently well... i lost count maybe every time i blinked my eyes (sometimes between blinking)?

Could someone tell me if a faulty modem would be the reason for internet dropping in and out at my house. The last customer service woman told me I needed a new modem, would not even offer to send out a service person. She said I had to have a new modem first. Mine is just 3 years old, the previous one was 13 years old. Previously the service person said there was noise on the line that made it go off and on???? Thanks for any help.
