Charter internet acting up?

Crypt

I check my connection by going to http://192.168.100.1 which is my Motorola modem. On the signal tab I usually see a downstream signal of around 10dBmv and a signal to noise ratio of around 40 db with higher numbers meaning a better connection. Big Joe is right if the signal to noise ratio is below 25 you got problems. My upstream power is normally around 30 dBmv and indicates how much signal my modem is having to deliver to get a good signal back to Charter. (some modems upper limit is 50 dBmv). I can even restart my modem from here if needed instead of going to the modem and unplugging the power cable. Warning: Do not default modem to factory settings.

Dale, what area of the county do you live?? When service is slow check speed thru modem with no router and check Upstream SNR. If it is 25 or below that is your problem and it is on the main line my friend. Charter bumped up the quams (coporate decision) and the system sometimes cannot handle it.

Sounds like a few things happening here. The outages are most likely caused by signal loss due to lack of line maintenance. Sometimes this isn't necessarily Charter's fault as they own very few of the main lines in Wilkes, especially outside of city limits. The slowness is probably just network saturation or a node was temporarily out and traffic had to re-route.

Still sucks

Internet and phone services have been cutting out for the past few months. I know for a fact this has prevented local businesses from being able to run debit cards and losing business.

I have placed several complaints-especially when I have no phone service half the night. You can be talking on the phone and BAM your done till they get it back up. Same with internet and I have lost some important business e-mails I was writing.

If you call these people the ones you talk with live in tim buck too. They have said they put me down for a service call and the next day I go to Charter here and they say I am not down for a service call.

Bottom line is when you call and complain they say they will give you a credit-I haven't seen that.

The service people cannot do anything unless it is happening when they are there so it is out of their control.

I don't think any thing can be done on a local level, it will take going higher up the chain to get them to make the changes to stop this interference. I was planning to change to Wilkes Telephone but they don't service my area. If Charter is going to keep this up they need to lower our rates and we need to be going higher up the chain with complaints to their Corporate Office in St. Louis,MO.

You can only hope your house does not catch on fire, or you become deadly ill when your phone service goes out or your out of luck.

I finally invested in a cell phone last week because of this.

So far I have not had any issues the last few day.... knock on wood....but in the past I have had issues. For us we don't live to far from a main line so its less likely to have issues, again knock on wood... than the place I lived at before. as far as folks loosing there tempers when you are talking to someone on the phone you have to remember they are not technicians that are out working on the lines, they have to do what they are told to do, no need loosing it at the person on the phone, its there job to help you getting ugly will not help. Do you like to be yelled at, especially when you have no control over the issue at hand... technology is technology, all systems have issues at some point. So just take a deep breath and breath.... and oh btw I don't work for charter.... and yes I have had my round with them as well in the past
