I use to have CenturyLink. When I upgraded from basic 765K to 1.5 MB, I could not tell a difference. After a month of slow service, I called them and they kept me on the phone for 2 hours while a tech searched my lines and took a block off. My speed was faster, but I never got the full bandwidth. So glad that I switched to Charter. You can get them to take the block off, but you will be on the phone for a while.

Every time I use http://speedtest.net I get a "Runtime Error" indicating there is a fault in the upload test. There seems to be a delay responding to the server. The default location is Hickory and that server gives me bad results, but if I choose another location I get decent results even if it is slower than expected.
One of the technicians with charter suggested http://speakeasy.net/speedtest and I like it much better with fewer errors. You might try different locations when testing your connection, it could be an issue with one location giving you bad numbers.

I feel your pain OC! We are paying for 10 as well because that is the speed that hubby needed for gaming, and we never get more than 3, I just tested it and it was 2.79. Im beyond sick of paying what I do for that.

I use FIOS every time I go to NoVA to work in DC. Every 3 mins the router drops connection on the wireless and the connection to the local hubs drops at random....so there... as I said I install networks....I get better service through my cell there then on the FiOS

Don't forget, alot of places on the east coast are still repairing after the big storm. The ususal "fat pipe" you may route through may be re-routed through a bunch of smaller networks while maintenance occurs. If it persists more than 48 hours, run a traceroute, report the jumps that time out to your ISP and complain. If it's occurring on a network they don't own or control, they can at least work with the other network owners to get an ETA for repair.

if your repairing fiber , splicing fiber, it must have been cut or you work at the source.

yes it has been around since the 70s , but as far as being a drop pulled to a custs home for services, thats new , ever heard of at&t uverse or verizion fios, how could one prefer copper the oldest network on the planet, over fiber ?

Fiber Optic network..almost flawless..if I had a $10 for every time I have went in to repair fiber lines and install a copper back bone, in the event the fiber went down. I would never work again... as for fiber being the future....the modern version really kicking off in the 70's is still being improved upon...now when CISCO gets the equipment working for using the color band thru fiber...then you will be talking the future...until then..fiber is basically the same as it has been for almost 30+ years..

actually you are wrong about how they will help...my quakelive.com went to pot on the lag. Called them up, informed them I was a network installer and already what they wanted me to do. The advanced this and turns out the DS3 line was running at 112%... new static IP issued to the new DS line and my ping was back down to 25 in the game. As for software virus, spyware etc causing slow net speed. No! It slows your system. Your net speed is based on the point pinged ( server hosting the page) and your NIC ( network interface card.) They switched about 2 weeks ago...things have been normal since!
