You can call Microsoft and they will give you a product key for little to nothing at all as long as it is a retail copy of the disc originally bought from a store shelf. Just read them the numbers on it to prove it is a legit copy.

If it is a newer laptop there is a sticker inside the battery compartment.

He's saying that the copy you bought is worthless. You have to have the product key to use it, and if you don't have it, then all you can do is buy a new copy.

bought it at a pawn shop has no box and there is no product key on the laptop do you know how i can get a universal product key

Serial number for software, should be in the packaging your Vista operating system backup disk came in. Or maybe on the cover of your manual / instructions. Probably a sticker.

A product key comes with many pieces of software. It is a security code normally found inside the package often in the CD case or written on the manual. When prompted you are required to enter that code in order to install the software or in the case of some factory installed software access its features.
