Best software to keep a pc running smooth

ComputerTek

Microsoft Security Essentials is an absolute must. MSE will scan your complete system, and all future downloads for malicious material. Also, running a DISK CLEANUP (remove all temporary files and unnecessary system log files), then run a Defragment on your Hard Drive.

Another great practice: Delete Internet Cookies constantly (daily if not hourly). A good way to do this is setting your web browser to delete cookies when you exit your browser. *TOOLS, then INTERNET OPTIONS.

Last, but not least, DO NOT go downloading crazy. If you have downloaded a program that has slowed your computer down; Use your control panel to "Add or Remove Programs", then find the program and uninstall.

Keeping your files organized and neat is not important to your pc's performance, but it will benefit you greatly in the long run.

Thanks,

I agree with GoWikes. Our company uses these two programs. Ccleaner is an absolute must for anyone these days. Becareful with the registry cleaner, but if you have not run one in a while, it is a good thing to do. Also http://www.sysinfo.org is a handy site to look up your processes on the Task Manger. Stopping unnecessary processes can help your boot and run times.

I am starting to dislike HP because the last two computers I bought are having problems with hardware and software and its becoming a nightmare just to fix all their problems.

I use Panda Internet security and that takes care of all the viruses and other crap you get online. After running Norton, there is no comparison. I have been using Panda for at least five years and I have no complaints, nor do I wish to change to another product.

IMHO, anything that runs in the background is going to slow a computer down.

I keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and CCleaner on my desktop, which I run once a month or so. I also keep a copy of AVG Antivirus downloaded, but not installed, because I don't need it to run in the background; any time my computer is running slow or I suspect that I have a virus, I'll install AVG, let it update and scan... then uninstall until the next time.

Printers are also pretty bad at running things in the background unnecessarily. HP seems to be the absolute worst. Who needs a program to run 24/7 that lets you know when your ink is low? I figure this is pretty obvious when you print something and nothing shows

You can go through your startup list (I use msconfig, but there are several utilities to help make it easier) and remove the files that you know are unnecessary. When in doubt, remove one thing at a time, then reboot after each removal and see if the program still works; if not, turn it back on. This can be time consuming, but if you spend an hour of downtime tweaking your computer then it can make the rest of your work time that much more productive.
