VPN on ddwrt DOES require an actual public facing IP address entered into the config page on the router - not a domain name.

You could always turn on remote management, and connect to the router via DDNS to get the current IP, reconfigure the router and restart it all remotely if you get stuck outside when it changes...

Even if it does change, you still dont need a static IP. You can use a free Dynamic DNS service.

No sh..t? Mine changes every two months.

...not necessarily...I have charter internet, dhcp assigned, and I've had the same IP address for almost two years now. Just be prepared to change your config whenever you get a new one...

Flo, the administrator would be me. Thats the first part of the problem. I can muddle my way through a lot, but currently, every detail Ive read about VPN's has pretty much been above my understanding.

You are describing is a site-to-site VPN tunnel. This is done outside of your OS, on the actual routers. Your OS doesn't matter.

Who ever is the administrator of the other network will need to provide you with config files needed for your router.

Whats the model of the router? I want see some manuals

My computer is running Win 7 pro. I want to use the VPN option that is built into DD-WRT firmware on a Buffalo router. I need to log into a location and access several different devices on the network.

VPN's are not too bad to set up. Vista and 7 have a wizard and is easy to use. What are you doing exactly? What OS's are you trying to connect? here is a quick map
