I have not played minecraft enough to know about any mods, but I do have a great recommendation. Cube 2: Saurbaten, this game is amazing and the multiplayer co-op editing is by far the best experience I have had in a simple FPS. Modding Cube 2 is very simple, I have made my own weapons using GIMP, sound effects using Audacity, and I retrieved a few texture patterns from an online modding site.

When you are looking for modded packages that are compressed in a .zip or any other compressed format, be cautious of malicious content. Many of the packages available can be harmful to your computer and corrupt your operating system and scanning them can be a useful method of protection against these common attacks.

Also, you can check the history of reviews for the package and look for bad review or even check the validity of the good reviews provided. More times than most, the provider of the malicious content will create other member accounts to post good reviews on his listing to draw in users.

The best way to mod a PC game is to spend some time experimenting with the packages (data, textures, patterns, CAD models, etc...), and find programs that are easy for you to use to manipulate those packages. When you get to the models of the characters, you can try Blender out, it is open source but there is a learning curve.
