Never use MSE as it sucks for detecting actual threats. I would recommend like others have suggested to download Avast Free Edition and Malware bytes free edition. Those 2 will be the only 2 programs you'll ever need for anti virus and spyware protection.

Thanks,
Chris

The biggest issue with Norton and McAffee, besides them being resource hogs, is that anyone creating a virus will write it to circumvent these two programs, since they are the biggest ones out there.

Also, the creator of McAffee is a complete lunatic.

Don't open email attachments and you don't need antivirus. Antivirus software is one of the worst items for slowing your computers performance

Actually, a year or so ago, Facebook surpassed email as the #1 source for viruses. So in addition to avoiding unknown attachments, you also have to avoid installing ANY Facebook apps (which are almost always written by 3rd parties that can't be trusted).

Otherwise, I completely agree that a savvy internet user will have much better performance by skipping the antivirus altogether, and simply scan once a month or so for spyware. I haven't used an antivirus program in years.

If you do need an antivirus program (especially if you have children, or are sharing the computer with users that are less savvy), then I strongly recommend AVG Antivirus Free, or Avast Free (I prefer AVG, but others prefer Avast). From my experience, either will work better than Norton, McAfee, or Panda, be less of a hog for your computer, and are completely free.

Get either for free at http://www.download.com, and they'll be virus-free as CNET scans all programs before they're available for download.

While you're at download.com, I also agree with bighammer69 that your best option will be to scan regularly for spyware using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (another excellent free program). You'll also want to get a copy of CCleaner (another freebie) to help keep your registry running fast.

Do not download the free antivirus software. They aren't any good and downloads are full of viruses.

I dont use a one. Slow your computer down like crazy. I use a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program that I use to scan computer about once a week. Works great and is free.
