Ok, you got me. Turn on your software firewall as well as your hardware firewall. Regardless of it being the built in Windows firewall, or something else.

This is the worst thing you can do. Turn on your windows firewall regardless of your physical firewall/router. Just do it.

Just to 'second' what Ant Flo has said and also, to that list, ad Webroot (formerly Spy Sweeper) Security Essentials and McAfee as well. All of them unnecessary IF you use MS Security Essentials.which will do as good of a job as any and it's FREE. It is on the MS website ... don't use a mirror site for it.
If you currently have one or more of these other anti virus/anti spyware programs installed you will need to uninstall them completely in order to install MSSE and that can be the 'rub'. When trying to uninstall some of these other programs, what Ant and I have said about them will become clear.

I use Avast free on all my Windows systems. It works great, never a problem. I've also heard that Microsoft Security Essentials works well, as someone else pointed out.
As for a firewall, if you have a Wireless router, it should function just fine as a firewall. If you're feeling paranoid, switch on the Windows firewall. The combinatin of it and your wireless router should be all the firewall you need.

Another vote for Avast. Free, doesn't hog system resources, and keeps me running fast and clean.

Windows Defender free from Microsoft. Not a memory hog and seems to do a very good job.

I'll go on record to say that Norton is a corporate wh*re that takes $ from companies that manufacture keygens and other pieces of malware in exchange for not flagging them.
Maybe I'm just bitter.

Kaspersky or ESet (NOD32) if you want to purchase something. Both are a lot easier on system resources than anything put out by Norton/Symantec, and have a much higher catch rating.
If you want free, go with Avast or Panda Cloud. Stay away from AVG, it's bloated.
