is if you have to re-install windows and format that drive, everything is gone unless you backed it up.

Here is what to do:

If your computer is brand new, partition the hard drive, I usually make c:\ around 30 gigs. and give the new partition the rest of the space. Then I'll make a few folders on the new partition such as MUSIC, PICTURES, MOVIES, and TEMP. I'll setup firefox and my downloading programs to put downloads in my temp folder. Then later I'll go in the temp folder and move the files where they should be.

If your computer is older and has a lot of stuff on it, copy your files to a portable hard drive or flash drive. Make sure you copyed everything, then delete your files from your computer. Use CCleaner to clean your drive, defragment a few times and then run Partition Manager. After that copy the files your backed up on to the new partition.
I use Paragon Partition Manager Free Edition to split my drive. I can't really give an in depth tutorial on here so you'll have to search.

Tip #2: Use CCleaner often. About once a week.

Tip #3: On older computers use Avast or Avira instead or Norton, McAfee or any of the big name anti-
virus programs.

Tip #4: Disable unnecessary programs from starting when windows loads.
You can use CCleaner, it's under tools>startup
or you can use msconfig hit windows key + r, then enter msconfig and press enter
and you will see the startup tab

Tip #5: Disable some services from running
hit windows key + r, enter services.msc and right click on the service you don't need and set the load to manual
