Cut in half, place cut side down of cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes, until you can put a knife in with ease . Take out of oven and let cool. Then you can easily pull skin off and spoon off the stringy part. Ready to use for your favorite receipes.

Do it right and it will not be stringy. Whole pumpkins is where canned pumpkin comes from. Duh. Just take a large spoon and scoop out all those string parts.
I like the microwave for this. A food processor will make it like the canned, only better.

There are three ways to transform an uncooked pumpkin into the puree used in baking:

Baking MethodCut the pumpkin in half and discard the stem section and stringy pulp. Save the seeds to dry and roastIn a shallow baking dish, place the two halves face down and cover with foilBake in a preheated 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) oven for about 1½ hours for a medium-sized sugar pumpkin, or until tenderOnce the baked pumpkin has cooled, scoop out the flesh and puree or mash itFor silky smooth custards or soups, press the pumpkin puree through a sieve

Boiling Method
Cut the pumpkin in half, discarding the stringy insidesPeel the pumpkin and cut it into chunksPlace in a saucepan and cover with waterBring to a boil and cook until the pumpkin chunks are tenderLet the chunks cool, and then puree the flesh in a food processor or mash it with a potato masher or food mill

Microwave Method
Cut the pumpkin in half, discarding the stringy insidesMicrowave on high power for seven minutes per pound, turning pieces every few minutes to promote even cooking. Process as aboveYou can refrigerate your fresh pumpkin puree for up to three days, or store it in the freezer up to six months, enabling you to enjoy fall pumpkins for months to come

I was just given a whole pumpkin (because I love to eat roasted pumpkin seeds). Now, I've only used 'canned pumpkin' in my recipes and I need help in making the pumpkin meat into an edible concoction. How do I do this? I was told to cut in half and slow bake in the oven? Is this a good way to cook it down? What do "YOU" do? Thanks, all!
