I remember "mush' from the Little Rascals TV show, but I've not eaten any.

I once ate a rattlesnake in Big Spring, Texas...so I could probably make a go of it.

Isn't that the same thing as polenta?

I make the apple fillling with dried apples, the same way as for fried apple pies: reconstitute dried apples by adding water and cooking til done. Sometimes it takes quite a bit of water. Cook them as dry as possible then add sugar to taste(probably a cup or two, depending on the natural sweetness of the apples) about 1/2 stick butter, dash of salt, and cinnamon, allspice and cloves to taste (go easy on the cloves) and a dab of vanilla. Chill. Bake a boxed spice cake mix according to directions. I use 3 8" pans. When they are cool, split each layer into to make six layers. Start stacking the apple filling between each layer. Then
frost the entire cake with remaining apple filling. Refrigerate at least a day, if possible. Take a Zantac and EAT!

My granny next door, not my blood granny but granny just the same, made something like this when I was a kid. She's long gone and I never asked for her recipe as I was just a kid, but she'd make large round cakes that were like pancakes. They weren't sweet really. She'd layer them with Whitehouse apple butter then frost the whole thing with apple butter. The stack would be maybe 8 or 12 layers, I think. I always had to be told several times we couldn't eat it until tomorrow because it had to sit in the fridge for a day. It was really good.

My grandparents on my Dad's side are buried at that church. I remember a Mabel Brown, too.

My Mom made this cake but unfortunately I don't have the recipe. psp_inspired's seems close, especially for the filling. I do know one of the secrets to success with this cake is to roll the layers out very very thin and use lots of layers. Also the cake needs to sit in a cool room for a couple of days before serving. It is a fantastic cake.

MMM my granny used to make a version of this using home made bisutes. Took me years to come close to what she made. I still remember what it would taste and smell like when she made.

There used to be a lady at the church I grew up in (in the Austin Community) that made the most awesomest Apple Stack Cake. Her name was Mable Brown. I would like to find a similar cake. Does anyone have any "old timey" recipes such as this??? Thanks!!
