i am tellin' ya daisy, i really wish i would have added mandarin oranges. it was great but i just know if i had added that one last item it would have been pure heaven.

Jabber, do you think adding mandarin oranges to your trifle would be good? Sounds like you have achieved perfection already. Can't wait to try it before I start my New Year's diet.

i put a lil twist on this recipe today

i made a loaf pan of the cake but did not frost it. i flavored some cool whip with orange jello powder. and i made some vanilla instant pudding.

i then sliced the cake and lined the bottom of flat bottomed bowl. poured pudding on top. then added the flavored cool whip. the bowl was deep enough for 2 layers of all 3 items.

i let it set for about 2 hours and have just tasted it.

all i can say yowzer

thats good stuff

next time i do this i am going to add some orange liquier to the cake before i add the rest of the stuff.

Orange Slice Cake
1 cup butter or margarine
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 pound chopped dates
1 pound chopped orange slice candies
2 cups chopped pecans
1 1/4 cups flaked coconut (1 can, 3 1/2 ounces)
1 cup fresh orange juice
2 cups confectioners' sugar

Cream butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition.
Dissolve soda in buttermilk and add to creamed mixture.
Place flour in large bowl and add dates, orange slice candy,
and nuts. Stir to coat all pieces well.
Add flour mixture and coconut creamed mixture.
Dough will be very stiff and easier to mix with hands.
Put dough in a greased and floured 13x9x2-inch cakepan.
Bake at 250° for 2 to 3 hours.
Combine orange juice and confectioners' sugar
and pour over hot cake.
Let the orange slice cake stand in the pan overnight.

Orange Crush Cake
1 c. butter, at room temperature
1/2 c. shortening
2 3/4 cups granulated sugar
5 eggs
1 c. Orange Crush or other carbonated orange drink
3 c. cake flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. Watkins Orange Extract
1 tsp. Watkins Vanilla, Original Double Strength
Icing
Preheat oven to 350º. Grease and flour a tube pan. Cream butter, shortening and sugar until fluffy.
Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. In a second bowl, sift flour and salt together.
Add dry ingredients to butter mixture, alternately with orange drink. Add extracts. Pour batter into tube pan and bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until cake is golden brown. Cool cake in pan for 10 minutes. Remove from pan and let cake cool completely on wire rack. Frost cake with icing.
Icing
1/4 c. butter, softened
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 box confectioners sugar
1 tsp. Orange Extract
Cream butter and cream cheese in mixer, gradually add sugar.
Add flavoring and combine well.


Note: Some cooks prefer the softer crust of a pound cake baked in an oven that is not preheated.
If oven is not preheated, the baking time may vary slightly.

I don't see why ye couldn't substitute margarine for the butter.

I think I'll make this one for Eee next time we have a sister sleepover. Don't know if I can wait that long. Sounds wonderful! One question, though. Is it one stick of butter or is it ok to use margarine?
