I actually found some vadalias last week and bought one. Today I went back to buy the rest of them, which I did. There were only four. While I was still there with my brown bag clutched in my hands, an old man came in to buy $5 worth of vadalias. The owner told him they were all gone but he did have the Texas sweet onions. I will buy them next as Bushman recommended them as being "sweeet and good". Thanks to all.

I agree, Walla Wallas and Texas Sweet are the closest you can get to a Vidalia. Next year, try our trick to store some in the basement or other cool place.
Take a ladies nylon stocking, drop an onion in the toe; tie a knot, drop in another onion and tie until you reach the top of the stocking. Then hang from a nail. When needed, cut below the knot above the onion in the toe.
This method keeps air circulating around the onions and helps them last loner. Plus, if one spoils, just cut it out of the stocking.

Always buy flat onions...never onions with a raised stem. The larger the stem area the quicker the onion will begin rotting around the interior center.

This is particularly important in Vidalia, Walla Walla, and Hawaiian onions.

Thanks for the info Bushman. I didn't know onions were so healthy for you, I just know they are real good. I may live to be really, really old.

Nothing comes between me and my onions. If they try, I'm gonna miss 'em. I have not tried an onion sandwich but if my new white sweet onion is good, I may give it a try. Hope my critters don't mind.

About Texas Sweet Onions. . .

http://plantanswers.tamu.ed..." width=213 align=right> What makes Texas SpringSweet and Texas 1015 SuperSweet Onions so unique?

Texas SpringSweet and Texas 1015 SuperSweet Onions are thin-skinned, sweet and juicy. And they have low levels of the tear-causing chemical pyruvate, so slicing, dicing, cooking and eating Texas sweet onions is all the more enjoyable.

How big are Texas SpringSweet and Texas 1015 SuperSweet Onions?

Texas SpringSweet and Texas 1015 SuperSweet Onions come in a variety of sizes. The smallest range from 1 inch to 2 1/4 inches in diameter, and the heftiest regularly check in at 3 3/4 inches or larger in diameter.

How should these onions be stored?

Hold your Texas sweet onions at 55-58 degrees F and keep dry. To preserve the moist tastefulness of these bulbs, drop them individually in a pair of pantyhose, tying a knot between each sweet onion. Hanging the nylon onion strands allows for sufficient ventilation and a longer-lasting, tastier sweet onion.

What type of plant is the onion?

The onion is part of the lily family. Onion kin include asparagus, tulips and yuccas.

Besides its anti-carcinogen properties, how else do Texas sweet onions benefit us?

History's earliest records show man using onions as a treatment for artery disease, arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, high blood pressure, dysentery and the common cold. We know now that compounds in onions can function as anti-coagulants, cholesterol modifiers and antibiotics.

How long have onions been around?

Onions probably originated on the high plateaus of southeast Europe. Once they were brought to the "Fertile Crescent" of Assyria, Sumeria, Babylonia and Egypt, their use increased significantly and spread dramatically.

I really got spoiled to Vadalia onions. Now they are out of season and I need to buy some onions today. Anyone know of anything comparable to vadalias. I love onions and cooking with them but I do not like strong, bitter onions. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
