Here is what I have found out about the tomatoes and why they bother you.

Until recently, as part of a diverticulitis diet, many doctors suggested avoiding foods with small seeds such as tomatoes or strawberries, because they believed that particles could lodge in the diverticula and cause inflammation. However, it is now generally accepted that only foods that may irritate or get caught in the diverticula cause problems. These foods include:

Nuts
Popcorn hulls
Sunflower, pumpkin, caraway, and sesame seeds.

The seeds in tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, strawberries, and raspberries -- as well as poppy seeds -- are generally considered harmless.

People differ in the amounts and types of foods they can eat. Decisions about a diverticulitis diet should be made based on what works best for each person. Keeping a food diary may help identify individual items in your diet.

Use a combination of Hunt's Tomato Ketchup (1-1/2 cups should do it) and 1 large can enchillada sauce. If it is not tomatoey enough then add some V-8 for extra flavor. I also add 3 bay leaves, some powdered ***in, and Texas Pete (I don't use chili powder because of the internal problems.

If you want to make all this chili quickly then heat 1 can Bush's mild chili beans, 1 can Bush's medium chili beans, 2 cans drained Hanover Kidney
beans, 1'2 cup each of finely diced onion, green pepper, and celery. I also add 2 to 2 tsp garlic salt. To all this after sauteing the vegs, I then add 1 lb ground beef or similar, brown same and then add the beans, catsup, etc., as added above.

Know this is not written in recipe form, but I'm in a hurry tonight to get something ready in the kitchen.

Try it, you'll probably like it. My family does.

is that diverticulitus that you have...

I would use both...at least 1 can of tomato paste for depth of taste...then use tomato sauce...or even better...at least to me...I use tomato juice...
so make that some tomato juice with a can of tomato paste...
