I ALWAYS add a good pinch of baking soda to my beans to "take the poots" out. Works pretty good. Don't add more than a tablespoon or otherwise your beans will be too salty. Oh, and when you stir the soda in, it's like watching a science project! The gas foams up out of the beans. WAY COOL!!!

I heard adding some baking soda helps reduce the gas. Haven't tried it yet? Has anyone else?

I have never heard of putting carrots in pinto beans. I will try just about anything to see if it works for me. Carrots sound like the would be good but I guess I would be like lucky and fight over the carrots.
Since Chevy mentioned mexican cornbread does anyone have a good recipe for it. Thanks

Funny about carrots. I add grated carrots to just about everything, potato soup, bread mixtures, beans, chili, spaghetti sauce...you name it. Doesn't change the flavor but adds additional fiber. With potato soup it gives a nice color.

Well, I did what everyone suggested and I think everything will be fine. Thanks :) I put fatback in there, salt and pepper and onions. Since it is my fault, I will not make hubby sleep in his mancave due to the gas he most likely will clear me out of the room with.
I would PREFER to cook them without opening a can and having them all ready cooked sassy..

Quack, it works better if you plug in and turn the crock pot on first.

Irish, I tried cooking pinto in the crock pot twice and they just would not get done. I cooked them on high for 8 hours and had to reset the pot and cook them another 4 hours. I do better cooking them on the top of the stove. Yes I did soak they the night before.

Be sure to wash them well in 3 waters as they are very dirty - as you will see when you rinse them. Also, add a peeled onion when you start the crock pot. You can also add a quarter cup creamy peanut butter for seasoning (doesn't give peanut butter taste.)

If you haven't started already. Look them first to make sure there are no small rocks in them. Rince them good. Put them in a pot and cover with water. Bring to a rapid boil and remove from heat. let stand for one hour. Pour off the quick soak water put them in your crock pot add fresh hot water, Turn it to high and cook till tender. Hopefully you have a small piece of fatback to season them with !!!!
