I love cooked turnips, but rarely ever cook them. My Mom always cooked them until tender, drain most of the cooking water, then added a little fatback grease, salt and since we like them fairly sweet, sugar to taste.

LOVE raw turnips and love the greens, but cooked turnips are not something I enjoy.

We used to eat them like an apple, too! Salt, pepper, and a little lime juice.
If they're very fresh, try shredding them raw and tossing with a little vinaigrette for a nice salad.
You can also try boiling them in chicken stock, then mash them with cooked carrots. Leave the whole thing just a little chunky, not whipped like potatoes. The carrots add enough sweetness, so you won't need sugar.
Also, try dicing them and adding them to a pot roast. They're seriously the best veggie for a pot roast, way better than onions and potatoes.

I am going to try steaming them. Thanks. We eat the greens all the time but never the turnips.

You can make a mash of turnips, potatoes, rutabagas and parsnips that will knock your socks off! Just follow the instructions whitehawk posted using sugar, etc. Make sure to have a hot cake of cornbread and a glass of sweet milk.

I love turnips just about any way they are fixed.
You can cook them as you would for potatoes to be mashed. Add a couple tsp sugar, some butter, and a little cream or evaporated milk, salt and pepper to taste.
or
Slice peeled turnips about 1/4" to 1/3" thick, place in a steamer bag with 1 tbsp water, 1 to 2 tbsp butter or margarine, salt and pepper to taste. steam about 5 minutes, depending on wattage of microwave oven.
or dice them and add to washed turnip greens (or collards or kale) and cook in covered pot until done but still firm. Some folks then fry the greens in a couple of tbsp of fatback grease for 3 to 5 minutes. Serve with corn fritters or corn bread. (I don't fry mine. I don't usually fry anything except an egg.)
also, see my potato soup recipe on a previous post. Substitute 1/2 potatoes with equal amount of turnips.
If all that fails, give them away or leave outside for the darned squirrels.

We have turnips coming out of our ears and both of us hated them as a child. Does anyone have a good recipe to cook them and make them eatable?
