The key to my sauce is fresh everything. Fresh Basil, fresh oregano, freshly cracked black peppercorns, fresh veggies. Instead of ground beef, I brown sweet Italian sausage links in beer, butter and garlic until the casing is a nice golden brown...slice them and then finish sauteing them. Add to your marinara and it makes for a delicious sauce!

Here is how I make mine...to me it's awhole lot better than the jar of sauce you buy. I make mine in big batches because I have a big family to feed, but you can cut the recipie in half.

2lbs hamburger
2 packets of McCormic Thick & Zesty spaghetti sauce mix
1 12 oz. can tomato paste
1 can diced tomaots
2 1/2 cups of water
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 onion chopped
2 tablespoons brown sugar
*you can throw in some italian seasoning or garlic if you wish*

Cook the hamburger, onion, and garlic together until hamburger is done.
(I use the c*ckpot for the sauce)
Combine the tomato paste, diced tomatos, brown sugar, water, and seasoning packets.
Then add in the hamburger, onions, and garlic and heat the sauce.

It's not very fancy or hard, but I just use a can of crushed tomatoes (or get whole and "crush" them yourself with your hands), italian seasoning, and sauted garlic. It's simple and healthier than bottled sauce. You can even buy crushed seasoned tomatoes.
