Wilkesone, German Johnsons' are now considered an heirloom tomato. Excellent fruit and heavy bearers. You need to stake them early and it doesn't hurt to start suckering fairly early. They are tall growing muthas'. Extra mulch around the base is a great help.
Time passes quickly. Just been about 30 - 35 years ago that they became all the rage here in NC.

A friend gave me some German Johnson tomato seeds to plant for some late tomatoes. Are these a good-tasting tomato? Never ate one before.

I meant to mention (and forgot) that if planting tomatoes, particularly heirlooms, and you are a smoker, you will often stunt or kill your plants from the tobacco residue on your hands and clothes. Tobacco mosaic, I believe, is what our county agent called it.

I grow Cherokee Purple, Russian Black Krim, Aunt Ruby's German Green and Mr Stripey in addition to the ones already mentioned. Cannot locate Mortagage Lifter plants this year, have started seed from last years crop, but I am not very successful at growing plants from seed. Hope to add Nebraska Wedding, Cherokee Chocolate and Green Zebra next year.

Keep an eye on the WS Journal for the Tomato Tasting at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. Last year they had 6 or 7 heirloom tomatoes. They may have already have it on their website calendar.
