Use pure old hog lard instead of corn oil. The Goodwill did switch to cornoil in the 80's and I noticed it the first bite and looked over at Junior Johnson and said what have they done.

Crypt, awesome! I got some soy flour at Walmart yesterday and it is pricey. I'm going to try making them today in a cast iron skillet with the corn oil. I hope they turn out good cause these people here at Myrtle Beach can't make a good burger to suit me!

Have tried them all and the soy flour cannot be left out . Yes it is very expensive even at Walmart. I make my wife say "what fer ye" when she serves some.

I loved these burgers when I was growing up! I see all the variations listed but has anyone actually tried them and did they taste like the actual burger?

“There is still much discussion as to the exact ingredients in the famous Goodwill "hamburgers." If you talk to Dare Greene, Ada Blevins, Lillie Holmes, or Dee Berrong, you will end up with four variations” - Ken Welborn, Record Publisher.

Ada Blevins (Granny):

5 lbs ground beef

2 dozen wet hamburger buns (work with hands until water is drained)

1 cup soybean flour

1 cup of cornmeal

Half a small box of sage

Half a small box of chili powder

Mix together

Fry total submerged in hot grease until golden brown

Serve on a bun with plain yellow mustard and slaw (chopped cabbage with vinegar, salt and sugar)

Dee Lovette Berrong:

"Flour, chili powder, yellow soy grits, sage, food coloring, and five pounds of ground beef. From each five pounds of beef, over ONE HUNDRED patties were made up, by hand, to be fried on one of the two big, flat grills in about 3/4" of pure lard"

I found the two above from The Record Newspaper and the one below on GoWilkes somewhere and it tastes very similar but maybe needs the soy grits instead of the flour.

1 1/4 pound ground beef
1 cup flour
1 cup old fashion oatmeal
2 teaspoon sage
2 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon chill powder
6 hamburger buns

Mix all ingredients together and fry. Makes 12 to 14 patties. Serve with slaw and mustard.
