daddy P, I am so glad your cake turned out so good. I was worried that I had given you incorrect advice. I didn't know about the Red Velvet cake. Now you have made me want to bake one.

I always tell my husband that I have to get the taste right first. Once that is done, then I will worry about how it looks. I hate to ice cakes because I do such a bad job of it. I took a few lessons and found out that the pro's cut that bump off and throw it away. I can't do that so mine always look funny.

I just took them out of the oven and lookin good so far. I only had 1/2 ounce of red food coloring so it is more of an orange/pinkish velvet cake.

Yes, I used baking soda and self rising flour. I followed the recipe to a tee. I even went and bought Wesson oil instead of using my off brand oil. Now I just got to go and clean out my dang fridge to make room.
I'll let you know how it is.

I've tasted the icing and it is the best I have ever tasted. The cake is baking. I have my doubts about it though. The batter seemed too thick and spongy. I hope it comes out okay.

Would you need to refrigerate a cake like this?

Grannynanny do those recipes call for self rising or all purpose flour?
Thanks Bush! I have never seen a recipe call for self rising and soda either. Maybe the buttermilk makes a difference if granny talking about what we are.

I don't know if this is right or wrong, but I have several cake recipes that use baking soda when buttermilk is the liquid.

Bushy if you read this will you tell me if it sounds right to use soda and self rising flour? I thought if you used baking soda you used all purpose flour. It is baking soda right? I knew you would know this probably. Thanks.
