soak it overnight in vinegar and water then wash it thoughly If you want to fix it like a roast in the oven just cut up carrots, onions, potatoes, etc. and slow cook it. It will be so tender you can cut it with a fork!

That is what Audreyt does too. I had not heard about all of this. She came up a few weeks ago and left a deer ham for me to cook for her. Loved the taste but after chemo the smell was a little nauseous . lol

Don't take this as making fun, but does it really take that much treating to make it edible? This seems like a lot of soaking, beering, vinegaring. What does it taste like untreated? Do people eat it without doing all of these things?

I was told to make a salt brine mixed with vinegar and soak it for 24 hours. This will also make it very tender.

You need to soak it in Buttermilk, or you can soak it in a mixture of water, vinigar and sliced onions. Thats what my mom does....it seems to work.

You can also soak it in beer in the frig. If it is a ham or shoulder turn it over serveral time to let it soak into whole meat. then you can put Zesty Italian Dressing over it and put in oven at 350 for 1 hour then turn down to 300 and let cook for serveral hours. I usually put in on the night before or early that morning depending on when you want to eat it. If you are cooking it in a frying pan, soak in beer for an hour then cook in Zesty italian dressing until tender and brown. That is how I fix it and poeple who didn't like deer liked it fixed like that. I hope this helps. I cook deer all the time.

Soak in cold water in refrigerator. Must drain and replace several times. 24 hours is good. Then fry in bacon grease. It really helps. Sometimes we fry some onions in the bacon grease, remove them, and then fry the deer meat.

I have heard of soaking the meat in buttermilk or italian dressing or even ranch dressing overnight. I haven't cooked deer meat much .
The men folk don't hunt in my family. Some of the deer meat I have ate that other people have made was very good.
