Great idea! I'm doing something similar with my Intercultural Club at WCC to help pay for our trip to New Orleans this Spring. We're volunteering to help Katrina victims rebuild. Difference is, we're selling our cookbooks. I'll keep everyone posted if anyone wants to buy one.

A good section for beginners may not involve food but kitchen tools. Easy food prep is a godsend in a warm & crowded kitchen around here!

tater i am gonna try that recipe as soon as i lose a few pounds. you might be right about the milk being too think to shake.

I Have made a website for family to view.They can enter and look through all my recipes and stuff I have collected over the last 50 years.

It covers cooking,planting,raising animals,butchering them ,taking care of their cast iron and lots of other stuff.Plus it has over 9000 recipes. I'm working on having it open for the public in a few months,all it takes is money. LOL

It has been fun doing it and trying to write the recipe and then forget something and have go over a redo it.Proof reading it is hard work,no one else but me knows what I mean sometimes in a recipe,like a pinch of this or a shake of that .LOL

Hopefully it will help the younger in the family,they love going to it and getting BBQ recipes or desserts.I have a lot of canning recipes on it and more are accepted all the time from different people and family.It even has a gowilkes section for the recipes I have got on here ,with the persons screen name as author.

Jaberwocky, the milk would be probably to thick to shake, but still is very easy to make - give it a try!

im going to have to try that tater it sounds good, my grandmother makes what i call kool-aid cake every year for my bday its a pound cake with icing made from kool-aid its my fav!!!!

that recipe will work even if they don't have a lot of kitchen tools. they can shake the milk and kool aird in a jar if need be.

Youv'e got to include the kool-aid pie - I got the receipe off this site - here are the ingredients

1 can sweeten condensed milk

1 pack of kool-aid

1 tub cool whip

1 graham cracker pie crust

mix milk and kool-aid together, add cool whip, put in pie crust. Soooo easy and everyone loves it!

how about a section on "substitutions",in other words if they dont have an ingredient what they can use instead of the original. that does come in handy sometimes if you happen to forget something at the store.

i think its really really cool it would mean so much more than to go and buy a $15 cookbook. ive already been writing down a bunch of recipes in a notebook that i plan on one day passing to my little girl. something else that would be good to include is "party food" like dips and what not... i posted a bunch of stuff like that on the superbowl party munchies thread

I think that is a great idea. I'd like to do something like that one day too.

yeah like i said i could have bought a cookbook for each of them, but i want to talk them thru it ... i want it real personal and only recipes i know they would eat

i don't want to appear morbid but i am getting older. i can buy gifts but what i really want to do is leave memories behind. i am hoping i create something that will be their first choice when they go to pull out a cookbook.

you should include a "30 min meal" section i have several quick dinners that i fix that are really really easy like

we have japaneese night i make terriyaki chicken with korrs aisian rice ($.98) i buy the shrimp sauce from kotos and cube the chicken and fry it in a pan w/ terriyaki sauce and viola a super cheap and good dinner!

- enchilada bake

brown the hamburger meat with taco seasoning and taco bell thick and chunky salsa

layer the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish kwith flour tortillas add a layer of hamburger mix, sour cream, then cheese add another tortilla on top then repeat the layers bake until cheese is melted

- taco ring

brown hamburger w/ taco seasoning (add green peppers or onions if desired)

lay cresent rolls on a baking pan in a circle, with the wide end on the inside

fill cresent rolls w/ hamburger and fold towards the inside of the circle and bake until golden brown

if i can think of any other inexpensive easy meals ill post, im a new cook myself and im learning i think this cookbook is a great idea!! i have a cookbook that has a section about cooking basics and a fruit/vegtables section that tells you how to pick the best and freshest and also how to extend the life of both that would also be something good to add

i just wanted to let my fellow recipers know about a small project i am working now. i could just go out and buy what i want but plan to make it more personal.

i have become sadly aware that my grandkids really are not learning some very basic cooking skills. they are of the new age of drive thrus and microwaves.

i am going to make cookbooks for a couple of college students in my family. i have a step daughter in maine and stepson in colorado. the stepson is actually a better cook than his sister .... but anyway that's what i am doing.

i have included some recipes they have enjoyed at my house in the past. i included the orange crush pound cake and the grape/walnut salad from here.

now i am not asking to be over run but just need some basic ideas of items to include. btw these cookbooks are for christmas this coming year. i am going to buy mini 3 ring binders, create a cover, etc. perhaps this might help someone else design something similar.

i would like to include section of what to do with leftovers too, something more than just pop it in the microwave.

i already have made a section of "the life of a ham" , which goes from a fine dinner all the way to western eggs and split pea soup
