Moment_of_Me, thank you so much for this recipe for it sounds so much like the one my grandmother used. I am certainly going to try this one. And thanks for the link that you also provided. Thanks to everyone that responded to this post.

I thought I had something similar in my recipe box and found this...it's a recipe for Cheese Puffs, but it's the same basic recipe.
1 pkg. (8 oz) sharp cheddar cheese, best to use it at room temperature. 1/2 cup butter/margarine 1 cup sifted flour 1/4 tsp salt paprika
Cream together butter and cheese. Add flour that has been mixed with salt. Mix everything together until it's all the same color and slightly firmed up. (Don't use a mixer – this stuff is too sticky.) It will look like it's breaking into crumbs.
Shape into 3/4 inch balls. Chill in fridge for 2 hours (or freeze overnight).
Arrange balls on ungreased baking sheet. (If you have the kind with an insulated bottom, use that. It bakes them more evenly.) Sprinkle paprika on top.
Bake at 450F for 8-15 minutes. WATCH LIKE A HAWK – they burn easily! The bottoms should be golden brown.

Here's a link to the highest rated cheese straw recipe on the site:
